How would you spend £10 million from the lottery?

£10 million is an awfully large amount of money and can be literally mind-blowing for someone without experience of handling investments of any kind. And that must be the vast majority of people in the UK.

Spending £10 million is not that difficult. Anyone can buy property, cars, holidays and give money away to friends, family or charities. But if you want to invest your winnings so as to provide a lifelong basis for income and financial security for you and your family and a legacy for any benefactors then some careful thought has to be applied.

Property investments tend to be for the long term. Anyone buying in 2010 is unlikely to have seen an immediate return on their investment as property prices in most areas remained static. After costs, stamp duty and other fees you would probably have lost ground in terms of realisable value. However, as the old saying goes, God has stopped making land but there are ever more people looking to buy so as a long term investment property should form part of any portfolio of investments.

2010 was the year the stock markets bounced back from the post financial market crash. Anyone investing in a FTSE 250 company tracker fund would have seen their investment rise in value by nearly 25%. Individual stocks have increased by even more than that - although hunting them out at the start of the year would have been a stroke of genius. Who would have invested in Kedco plc? This bio science energy company shares rose by a staggering 3,806% in the year. The next highest returner was a mere 1,500% delivered by Equity Resources Plc. But there were over 30 stocks returning in excess of 180% growth in share value in the year so with some luck and judgement the stock market could have seen impressive returns.

For the braver investor the emerging markets were a good place to speculate. Mongolia (up 136%) and Sri Lanka (up 92%) were the leading growth markets - but not for the faint hearted.

Of course, stars may be missed but the strategy should be to get at least inflation plus 3% growth in value per year over a long term cycle. Achieve that and you will have done well.
